Chomsky on alterity

One of the few positive secondary effects about the US/the west fighting wars of attrition in Iraq and Afghanistan are the emerging alternatives to the Washington consensus apparatus and mechanisms that have so bankrupted the developing world (to varying degrees and at various points in time). These truly regional bank initiatives will hopefully (in 10-15 years) be more needs-responsive and impact-positive in terms of technical assistance and financing of poverty alleviation efforts. This is of course not a given and not to say all that the IFIs are doing is bad but it does provide much needed alternatives, something free markets are all about, right? It may even spur much needed reform in best practices within IFIs and further growth in robust civil societies.
